Regional MSP Partners With Growth Investor to Accelerate Cybersecurity & Cloud Expansion
After more than 25 years building Infranet Technologies Group into a trusted IT partner for businesses across the Carolinas and Virginia, founder Michael Chittum and partners, John Livesay and Garth Wermter, completed a majority recapitalization that sets the company up for its next phase of growth—and allows Michael to fully step away from day-to-day ownership.
Infranet at a Glance
Launched in 1998, Infranet has evolved from a small network integrator into a full-service Managed Service Provider (MSP) and Managed Security Service Provider (MSSP). With offices in Wilmington, Raleigh, Rocky Mount, and Richmond, the company delivers managed IT, cybersecurity, cloud, and networking solutions to small and mid-sized organizations in healthcare, legal, finance, construction, manufacturing, and other sectors.
Why the Owners Considered a Transaction
As Infranet grew, the roles of the three owners evolved. Michael, who was devoting very limited time to the business at the time of sale, was ready to fully transition out of the business and focus on other interests. At the same time, John and Garth saw meaningful untapped potential—particularly in the high-growth Raleigh and Richmond markets and in deeper cybersecurity and cloud offerings—but knew that scaling to the next level would require additional capital, a broader platform, and a more formal growth engine.
Their goals were clear:
-
Provide Michael with a clean exit.
-
Keep the team and culture intact.
-
Find a partner who would invest in sales, technical talent, and geographic expansion.
-
Allow John and Garth to roll equity and continue leading the company.
MidStreet ran a focused outreach process to strategic MSPs, security-focused platforms, and growth-oriented financial sponsors active in the lower middle market.
The Perfect Partner
The process generated strong interest from a mix of regional strategics and national platforms. After multiple rounds of offers, meetings, and discussion, the owners selected a growth-oriented IT group with fantastic fundamentals: CyberAdvisors.
A New Chapter for Infranet
With the transaction complete, Michael has transitioned out of the business, shifting his focus to family, travel, and life outside of IT. John and Garth remain at the helm of sales and operations, now backed by a partner with the resources to:
-
Add additional sales coverage in Raleigh and Richmond.
-
Invest further in cybersecurity and cloud practices.
-
Continue building out Infranet’s reputation as the go-to IT and security partner for growing organizations across the Carolinas and Virginia.
What began in 1998 as a small regional IT outfit is now a core part of a larger technology platform—still local, still relationship-driven, but equipped to grow faster than ever. And for the owners, employees, and customers of Infranet, that’s a success story worth telling.
