Pirate’s Cove Marina: A Legacy of Passion and Community

A cornerstone of the Outer Banks of North Carolina, this world-class marina has embarked on a new chapter under the stewardship of the Harrell family from Ahoskie, NC.

The Genesis of a Vision

Acquiring the marina in the 2007 marked the beginning of a dream for the late Jim Tobin and his wife, Tammy. Their vision was to create a world-class, full-service marina within the Pirate’s Cove community, offering both the charm of the boating lifestyle and the convenience of modern amenities. Over the years, Pirate’s Cove Marina flourished, expanding to include 195 slips for both private owners and transient visitors, a 13,000-square-foot Pavilion for events, and a beloved seafood restaurant and tiki bar operated by Blue Water Grill.

A Legacy of Entrepreneurship and Community Service

Jim Tobin wasn't just a businessman; he was a pillar of the community. His journey from inspecting nuclear power generating stations to becoming a key figure in local government and various advisory boards illustrated his commitment to making a difference. Jim's efforts to secure a local dredging vessel transformed the commercial and recreational fishing landscape in Dare County, ensuring the waterways remained navigable and supporting the local economy.

Tammy Tobin, equally passionate about the community and the environment, was instumental in the marina's success. She held a leading role at the marina while also pursuing her own venture, Class Act Designs, showcasing her talent in handcrafted jewelry.

Together, Jim and Tammy's efforts at Pirate’s Cove set records in tournament fishing and solidified its reputation in the sport fishing community.

Transitioning to a New Era

In December 2023, the Tobin's legacy was entrusted to the Harrell family, known for their longstanding businesses, Jernigan Oil Company and Duck Thru convenience stores. The Harrell family has a connection to the marina that spans generations. Michael Harrell, representing the fourth generation of Jernigan Oil, and his son Jordan, who has deep personal ties to Pirate’s Cove, aim to continue operating the marina with the same level of excellence established by the Tobins.

I know I've got really, really tough shoes to fill. We have some big plans for the marina.  We want Pirate's Cove Marina to be a destination that you want to come - and once you come you want to come back.

- Jordan Harrell

The Harrells' commitment to the marina and the broader Outer Banks community is evident in their plans to maintain the tradition of hosting renowned tournaments such as the Alice Kelly Memorial Ladies Only Billfish Tournament and the Pirate’s Cove Billfish Tournament, events that not only celebrate the spirit of competitive fishing but also bring the community together.

The sale of Pirate’s Cove Marina to the Harrell family is more than a business transaction; it is a story of continuity and renewal. It represents the passing of a torch from one passionate family to another, both deeply rooted in the community and committed to preserving the legacy of a place that has brought joy, adventure, and a sense of belonging to many.

MidStreet's Role

The transaction was managed by Erik Sullivan and Jeffery Baxter. Understanding the unique appeal and complex nature of Pirate's Cove, MidStreet implemented a structured process to manage the sale. This included comprehensive market analysis, targeted marketing campaigns, and the creation of a competitive bidding environment.

Midstreet's goal was to honor the legacy of the founders while welcoming new stewardship that aligned with the long-term vision for the marina. MidStreet was able to position Pirate's Cove in the marketplace to attract a highly qualified group of potential buyers. Their expertise in crafting a tailored sales strategy, conducting buyer interviews, and facilitating detailed negotiations culminated in a transaction that not only met but exceeded expectations.

Through MidStreet's careful guidance, the transition of Pirate's Cove Marina became a story of continuity and optimism, proving that the right partner can make all the difference in honoring the past while embracing the future.
