If there are two things Americans love, it's ice cream and the beach. The average American consumes more than 23 pounds of ice cream every year and while many businesses on the Outer Banks serve ice cream, there's only one place to find authentic frozen custard. Our customers really do love us and the proof of that is our great online reviews for the third year in a row, we've gotten those TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence. We have a Yelp award also for this year and it's been the same the past two years also. So that tells me that we're doing something right. Named one of America's 10 best ice cream shops on the beach by Coastal Living magazine, kill devils frozen custard and beach fries has become a must stop place for locals and visitors alike.

The customers loved the custard because it is so yummy and it's so good. We make it on the hour, daily.  It's creamy it doesn't have that icy feel to it. It's just a nice creamy texture and people just really love it, so it's really neat.

Success starts with high-quality natural ingredients. Kill devils has been sourcing their premium custard from a respected family-owned supplier for more than 10 years. When making ice cream, air is pumped into the mix to increase its volume and while some ice cream can be as much as 50% air, frozen custard contains only 10%. This is what gives it its rich creamy and delicious taste. Although custard is the most popular  menu item, the business offers a diverse selection of classic American beach food.

Food completes the picture, people will come for lunch and then guaranteed they'll get a cup of ice cream or some ice cream product after that or they'll get a milkshake with their meal, that kind of thing, so it's really not just ice cream or frozen custard, it's the complete thing. That's the value the food but really we're starting to in the past three or four years we've started to get a reputation for the food also, especially the fries.

Hailing from boardwalks of long ago, Kill Devils famous beach fries are a staple on the Outer Banks. Starting with fresh Idaho potatoes, the fries are hand sliced, blanched and cooked until golden brown. Each year more than seven million people, visit the Outer Banks for their summer vacations and with a beautiful standalone building directly on the bypass, Kill Devils is in a perfect location.

We're very busy we have two windows open at nighttime and the line will sometimes reach out to the street.

While it is busy, what could be more fun than ice cream? The upbeat work environment and family atmosphere keeps many of the employees coming back year after year. We have employees here at Kill Devil’s frozen custard, a lot of them are teenagers. Which is good, a lot of them have been with us for a long time, we know some of the families, we try to get teenagers that have a good work ethic, that their parents are involved in their lives and they do an excellent job for us.

The Outer Banks is one of the most desirable places to live in the country and due to the seasonal nature of the business and owner has the flexibility to take several months off each year. Since we closed it went before Halloween, we have that whole stretch between then and the third week in March to basically do what we want.

It's really fun because you get to work hard in the summertime, we have wonderful employees to work with, wonderful customers to see on a daily basis but then when we slow down, we have the option to just relax.

Kill Devils Frozen Custard and Beach Fries has been delighting customers of all ages, for more than 15 years.
